CAN.EXE and DUMP.EXE
Copyright (c) 1992 - Mike Edgerton - All Rights Reserved
These Programs Are Freeware And May Not Be Sold For Any Price!
What Are They?
CAN.EXE is a simple utility that you can use to replace the DEL
command. Instead of deleting the file that you want to remove, CAN
moves a copy to a directory on your C: drive, and then deletes the
file. If you accidently delete an important file, you go to the CAN
directory, and copy the file back to it's original directory.
DUMP.EXE is the utility that you use to clean out your CAN
directory. When CAN transfers your unwanted files, it also sets the
file attributes of those backup files to Read Only. This is to keep
you from accidently deleting those backup files.
How Do I Get Started?
To begin using CAN, you must first copy these two files, CAN.EXE
and DUMP.EXE to your DOS directory (or any other directory that is
in your Path). Then, create a directory on your C: drive named CAN.
Don't put CAN.EXE and DUMP.EXE in that directory, as you will lose
them the first time you use DUMP.
How Do I Use CAN?
The Syntax for using CAN is simply:
CAN [FILENAME.EXTENSION]
Examples:
CAN YOURFILE.EXE
CAN *.*
Online Help:
CAN /H (or /HELP or /?)
Version Number:
CAN /VER
CAN will work from any drive as long as it is in the Path.

WARNINGS:
CAN will remove all of the contents of a directory if you
accidently use the name of a directory as a filename. It will,
however prompt you before it removes the files.
How Do I Use DUMP?
The Syntax for using DUMP is simply:
DUMP (or DUMP.EXE)
Version Number:
DUMP /VER
DUMP will work from any drive as long as it is in the Path.
Disclaimers:
I have used CAN and DUMP on my computers, and they have caused
no problems. The concept here is that I am trying to keep myself,
and those that work with me from making mistakes that would cause
the loss of Data. However, if the programs are misused, it is
possible that you could lose Data. I make no warranty on these
programs. You are using them at your own risk. Gosh, I feel better.
What is Freeware?
These programs are Freeware. They are yours to use, to copy, to
distribute (give them to your Mom for Mother's Day), and whatever
else, as long as you don't charge anything for them (other than the
connect time from Compuserve or another ONLINE service). You
cannot, and I repeat CANNOT charge any duplication charges or any
other charges for these programs. Also, as I am a fan of big
business, any Fortune 500 companies that want to use this program
are welcome to it, and I might even be willing to provide copies
with other Paths and directory names so you can use them on a
network. These programs cannot be altered in any way, and this
READ.ME file must be included with the Executable files. If you do
feel the need to violate my wishes, then I hope that something
awful becomes you.
Feed My Ego:
If you use these programs and find them useful, drop me a line
on Compuserve.
